Learning How to Drive

Automotives, Life No Comments »

I can remember one of the biggest milestones in my life was learning how to drive.  Okay, it even felt good when I had my learners permit - I felt all grown up.  But, even though you think you know how to drive, the experience is different than what you expect.

Remembering back to my driving lessons in Redditch, I can think of nothing but the stress that I must have put on my driving instructor.  He seemed like a calm fellow, but after our first drive, he looked a little frazzled.

Maybe it was because I just really didn’t know what I was doing.  Maybe it was because all of my driving experience was from video games (and it doesn’t matter if you crash in a game, right?).  But, whatever it was, things didn’t go so well the first time out.

It was so bad, that I needed to find another driving school for my second time out.  But, by then, I did have some practice, and I eventually passed my driving exam with flying colors.

I still feel sorry for the first instructor I had - I know I didn’t drive very good.

Expanding Our Inventory

For many years now, my family has owned and operated a wedding supply store in town.  We have mainly focused on apparel such as wedding dresses and tuxedoes, but recently we decided that we needed a change of focus.

You see, another wedding store opened up in town, and sold exactly what we did.  I didn’t really think that the town would support two wedding stores, and with them undercutting our prices, we had some decisions to make.

What I suggested to my parents is that we branch out and become a fully featured wedding store instead of just specializing in apparel.  We could offer cake toppers, wedding accessories, and wedding favors as part of our product offerings.

After the first month of carrying the new products, our sales were up thirty percent!  Not only have we made some more money, but I think that we have ensured that our family business will continue running for many years to come.

Not Raising A Quitter

I have always been the type of person who likes to hop from one hobby to another. There is probably not a single sport that I have not tried. I have a lot of first year medals from many different things, but it didn’t seem to matter how good I was at something, I never stuck with it for very long.

I have also played just about every single musical instrument known to man. If I had stuck it out on these, I could be my own band. I actually got pretty good at some of them, but like the sports, they eventually lost their appeal.

As an adult, I think that it was wrong of my parents to let me jump from one thing to another. It taught me little dedication and responsibility and left me being okay in many things but not great at anything. I decided, when I had kids, I would teach them differently.

When my daughter was six, she began taking piano lessons. A year later, she wanted to quit and I would not let her. She is now twelve and will eventually learn & master the piano course. She does very well and enjoys it a lot. She is much better at the piano than I have ever been in anything and I am very proud of not only her, but of myself for making her stick with it.

I Really Didn’t Know

I was attending a seminar about OLED for lighting in the future and I got a lot more than I bargained for out of that seminar. I thought I knew quite a bit about OLED, but it turns out that I was very much in the dark. No pun intended. I was aware of the fact that OLED lighting was making quite a breakthrough and would one day be available to the public.

What I was not aware of was how many other devices would be able to run on OLED. I went over to look at an AMOLED display and got into a great conversation with the gentleman that was running it. I was thrilled to learn about all of the advances that they had been making and I realized that I really didn’t know much at all.

I left that seminar knowing a lot more than when I came. I guess that is what makes a successful seminar. The thing is that most people that I know have no idea what OLED is and so I though I knew it all. I have decided, now that I know they will be available in the future, that I will have the first OLED TV of anyone I know.

A Little Spring Insurance Cleaning

Insurance No Comments »

Each time spring comes around, I have a set of tasks for me to do.  For most people, it would be time to clean their house and yard, but I look at it as a time for something else.  In spring, I make sure I compare insurance quotes from many companies to ensure that I am paying what I should for the insurance I need.

Now, this doesn’t just stop at car insurance - I look at everything.  I get some health insurance quotes to make sure that my coverage and monthly costs are to my benefit.  Especially as I age, it is something that I am continuously looking at.

Then there is those life insurance quotes.  I have been with the same company for a long time now, but I try to see if I can save anything off of my premiums - but so far, no luck.  Who knows, eventually there may be a company that is less than what I pay.

The process of going through my insurance plans takes about a week.  But, I can usually save myself some money - so it is worth it.
